We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2200 people. The aim of this project is to develop catalysts to produce aromatic monomers from Kraft lignin using Biphasic oxidative depolymerization (BPD). Lignin is one of the most abundant biopolymers on earth, present in all plants. The polymer is created in the plants by polymerizing aromatic monomers, which yields a polymer with aromatic units. Lignin is mostly produced as a by-product in the pulp and paper industry, which makes it a sustainable raw material for production of high-value aromatic chemicals which are currently produced from fossil-based raw materials. Oxidative depolymerization is one way of producing these chemicals that has shown great promise for industrial applications. Oxidative depolymerization is often done under alkaline conditions at elevated temperature and pressure. The challenges with oxidative depolymerization are low yields, due to the robust bonds between the aromatic units in the lignin, and over-oxidation and repolymerization of the desired monomers. Catalysts can be used to increase monomer yields and selectivity in the reaction. Biphasic oxidative depolymerization (BPD) is a novel approach that has been developed to protect the valuable aromatic monomers and increase yields. The depolymerization of lignin in an acidic aqueous phase is combined with the extraction of monomers by an organic phase, which protects them from degradation. In this project, different metal salt catalysts will be tested both homogeneously and heterogeneously to assess their performance. We want to determine the theoretical maximum monomer yields of the lignin and which species that are being produced by the reaction. Furthermore, we want to find suitable reaction condition for the depolymerization and a suitable catalyst for increasing yields. Project: Commissioning of new Sub-micrometer and minimal invasive Wire Scanners for on-line beam monitoring at SwissFEL Characterizing and monitoring low and ultralow-emittance and sub-micrometer transverse size electron beams is highly demanded by Free Electron Laser (FEL) developments and advanced acceleration concepts under study in several facilities. In this view, the electron-beam diagnostic group of SwissFEL and the Laboratory of Nano and Quantum technologies (LNQ) at the Paul Scherrer Institut are pursuing the development of an innovative nano-fabricated and sub-micrometer spatial resolution Wire Scanner (WS). At SwissFEL, its minimal invasive design will open the possibility of monitoring transverse profile and emittance of the linac beam during standard lasing operation. Few prototypes of nano-fabricated WSs are already installed in the SwissFEL linac and a new generation of nano-WS will be installed in the next months. You will take part in the on-beam commissioning of the new prototypes during dedicated machine time. The primary goal of the traineeship will be the analysis of the experimental data aiming to assess the WSs spatial resolution performance and invasiveness. In particular, you will focus on the SwissFEL WS stations devoted to the emittance measurement. In this framework, you will help designing and implementing the preliminary analysis tool needed to measure the emittance from the beam transverse profiles acquired using these WSs. | 2100 CHF Monthly | 8.2 daily, 41.0 weekly | Paul Scherrer Institut | 5232 Villigen | www.psi.ch | Employer | 1750 CHF Monthly | 900 CHF Monthly | Students with any NON-EU/EFTA nationality need for the visa and work permit an official letter from their university, confirming that the internship is compulsory (IAESTE Switzerland will apply for them). | COBE

Project: Understanding electrolyte-dependent gassing behavior of LMFP as next-generation positive electrode material Continuous efforts have been practiced on pursuing energy storage systems with high energy density, long lifespan, and low cost. Among them, Li-ion batteries have conquered the portable electronics market and are widely employed for electric transportation. As the demand for low-budget electric vehicles with long cruising ranges is increasing, the energy density of the current state-of-the-art electrode material LiFePO4 (LFP), advantageous from an environmental and economical point of view, no longer satisfies the needs. An alternative olivine cathode material, LiMnPO4 (LMP), shares the same theoretical capacity as LFP and comes with the benefit of a higher operational voltage of 4.1 V, resulting in a 21% increase in energy density. However, due to the material’s low conductivity and structural instability, LiMnPO4 suffers from low capacity retention. The combination of LFP and LMP, a solid solution called LiMnxFe1-xPO4 (LMFP), has therefore attracted global interest in the industry and in academia. Your project involves the assembly of cells with pre-made LMFP electrodes followed by electrochemical characterization and contributes to our effort of elucidating the electrolyte-dependent gassing behavior of LMFP cells, a critical input for durability and safety considerations. | 2100 CHF Monthly | 8.4 daily, 42.0 weekly | Paul Scherrer Institut | Villigen PSI | www.psi.ch | Employer | 1750 CHF Monthly | 900 CHF Monthly | EU/EFTA passport required | COBE

Research on photovoltaic systems has been carried out at the Laboratory for Photovoltaic Systems (PV Lab) of Bern University of Applied Sciences in Burgdorf since 1988. Special emphasis is placed on inverters whose behaviour on the power grid is being investigated at the PV Lab. The challenges of applied research in this field have changed with time. While the goal in the 1990s was demonstrating that PV systems could reliably generate power for longer than five years, today the key issues include safety (e.g. fire protection) and grid conformity. Thanks to its commercial success, photovoltaics technology is continually penetrating new markets. Each new application presents new challenges and risks. BFH’s PV Lab has continued to focus on its core competencies: it performs testing and analysis based on application-relevant scenarios which PV planners and installation engineers cannot undertake themselves. They offer versatile applications across various scientific domains. For example, students can investigate chemical reactions of small molecules in Earth's atmosphere and exoplanets to elucidate physicochemical conditions in remote environments. Another avenue of exploration involves the precise determination of rovibrational properties of small molecules, catering to the demands of highly resolved microwave spectroscopy. Such analyses often facilitate the discovery of novel species within interstellar environments. The project will be implemented in the laboratory of the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Electrical Engineering, which is equipped with modern laboratory equipment (power supplies, oscilloscopes, signal sources, computing equipment, soldering stations). Electrical impedance tomography is a relatively new method for detecting the concentrations of heterogeneous multiphase mixtures in a selected fluid profile. The principle of the method is to place a number of electrodes (for example 16) in the wall around the profile to be measured and then rapidly measure the mutual impedance between all combinations of electrodes. From the measured impedances, the distribution of different heterogeneous components, each with a different specific impedance, can then be back-calculated in the measured profile. The measurement of the impedances is computer controlled and it is possible to obtain the distribution fields of the heterogeneous components or concentrations even in real time. | 15000 CZK Monthly | 8.0 daily, 40.0 weekly | Brno University of Technology Department: Department of Theoretical and Experimental Electrical Engineering | Brno | https://www.utee.fekt.vut.cz/ | IAESTE | 11000 CZK Monthly | 5000 CZK Monthly | Please follow the instructions for preparing nomination documents and the visa process in the attached document. Proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies up to 13 TeV have been recorded. The largest dataset available for analysis consists of about 140 fb-1 of data recorded between 2015 and 2018. Data-taking at a slightly higher centre-of-mass energy of 13.6 TeV started in summer 2022. The ATLAS experiment is one of two general purpose detectors, designed to study a wide range of processes in both proton-proton as well as heavy ion collisions. A highlight was clearly the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012, with 2022 now marking 10 years since its discovery. The heaviest elementary particles have masses of the order of 100 times the mass of the proton, while neutrino masses are more than a million times lower than the proton mass. However, all interactions, except those of the Higgs boson, do not seem to depend on their masses. This is one of several mysteries surrounding the Standard Model of particle physics. The LHC offers the opportunity to study the couplings between the heaviest known particles: the top quark, the Higgs boson, and the W and Z bosons. It provides sufficient integrated luminosity to measure the cross-section for the production of final states such as a top quark in association with a W, Z or Higgs boson. This allows us to investigate the couplings between these particles to see if they really follow the expectations of the Standard Model. In particular, the cross-section for the associated production of a top quark and a Higgs boson is sensitive to the relative sign of the coupling of the Higgs boson to a fermion and a boson and as such is a crucial test of the Standard Model. The cross-sections for the production of pairs of heavy elementary particles are very small and so signals have to be extracted out of a host of background events. Machine learning techniques, both neural networks and boosted decision trees, play an important role in the separation of signal from background. Our group plays a leading role in several analyses of events with a single top quark and a heavy boson. We are active in developing new machine learning techniques to improve the separation of signal from background. We also work on improving the event reconstruction and study different aspects of the detector performance. The research internship would contribute to the studies of the use of advanced machine learning techniques to the extraction of signals from the associated production of top quarks and heavy bosons, e.g. tH or tZ. | 934 EUR Monthly | 8.0 daily, 40.0 weekly | Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universitaet Bonn Department: Physics and Astronomy | Physics Institute, Nußallee 12, Bonn, Germany | https://www.physik-astro.uni-bonn.de/home?set_language=en | IAESTE | 934 EUR Monthly | 450 EUR Monthly | See additional documents. The different growth and lithography parameters will be studied in order to develop high aspect ratio micro-structures. The fabricated devices will be measured mainly by atomic force and secondary electron- microscopies and by photoluminescence measurement. In this project, we want to develop new integrated materials on Si substrate made by Pulsed Laser Deposition and liftoff processing. PLD is a high quality growth technique commonly used for many applications in photonics which can provide for instance low loss waveguides grown at room temperature. In PLD, an intense pulsed laser beam is focused through an optical window on a solid or liquid target under vacuum. If the target absorbs enough energy, the laser-material interaction leads to the formation of a plasma consisting of partially ionized species directed perpendicularly to the target surface, which can deposit on the substrate facing the target. It has the advantage that the molecules reaching the surface have an energy which can exceed the thermal energy which allows to envision lift-off processing for a fast integration. Recently, we have shown that rare earth doped waveguides and grattings can be made by combining PLD and liftoff processing. Such results are extremely promising since they open a way to new materials integration on Si platform. However, we want now to optimize the material and processing to improve the device resolution for practical applications. | 630 EUR Monthly | 7.0 daily, 35.0 weekly | Institut Lumière Matière Lyon I | Villeurbanne | Trainee with help of IAESTE | 500 EUR Monthly | 500 EUR Monthly | - Please don't forget the enrollment certificate in the nomination, with a precise end date of the certificate (Month + Year) which should be later than the desired end date of internship. - Each student can ask for a financial help for accommodation of 90-130 € to the French administration (APL from CAF). - You can get in touch with your school if you are eligible to any Erasmus funding or other grants (from 410€ to 690€).
